There is a question I get asked in different ways depending on who is asking. Why Jamaica? Why the Bronx? What does a craft beverage brand have to do with either of those places?
The answer is everything.
My family is from Jamaica. That is not a backstory detail. That is the foundation. Growing up with Caribbean roots means growing up with a specific relationship to food, to herbs, to the idea that what you put in your body carries meaning. In Jamaica, that knowledge is not written in books. It is passed through kitchens, through markets, through the way an elder hands you something and tells you what it does for you. It lives in the culture the way music lives in the culture. You absorb it before you can name it.
The Bronx is where that culture landed when it crossed the water. And the Bronx did what it always does, it took what it received and made something new out of it. Caribbean families brought their herbs and their traditions and their ways of gathering and their music to a borough that was already alive with its own energy. And out of that collision, something happened that the world is still catching up to understand.
Hip hop was born in the Bronx because the Bronx was already carrying everything it needed to create it. The Caribbean diaspora was there. The storytelling tradition was there. The communal gathering was there. On August 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc threw a party in a rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue and the cultural conversation that had been building for decades found its voice.
That is not a separate story from Jamaica. That is the same story with a new chapter.
I grew up in New Jersey and was surrounded by that culture. The music, the food, the herbs, the community, the way of moving through the world with intention and creativity and pride in where you come from. New Jersey is where the craft was honed. It is where seven years of recipe development happened. It is where the kitchens were, where the batches were tested, where the idea became something you could taste.
But the soul of what is in every bottle came from somewhere else first.
vital RÜTs exists because one culture traveled. It started in the hills and markets of Jamaica. It crossed an ocean and took root in a Bronx borough that made it into something global. It was carried by families who brought their knowledge with them and refused to leave it behind. And it landed in New Jersey in the hands of someone who spent three decades learning to listen to what that culture was trying to say.
Inspired by Jamaica. Born in the Bronx. Brewed in New Jersey.
That is not a tagline. That is a biography.
